According to the current guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Indian citizens holding a valid Indian passport are permitted to utilize up to USD 250,000 (or its equivalent in other currencies) per financial year for personal or leisure travel abroad under the Basic Travel Quota (BTQ) scheme. However, for each trip, a maximum of USD 3,000 (or its equivalent) can be carried in cash, unless specified otherwise in RBI’s exceptions.

It is mandatory to purchase the foreign exchange portion of your travel package under your BTQ entitlement through an authorized dealer licensed by RBI. This must be done in accordance with the latest RBI regulations. Payment for the foreign exchange portion should be made at the prevailing rate, along with the required BTQ and A2 forms duly signed.

You may also obtain foreign exchange for personal use during your trip from the same authorized dealer, using the remaining amount from your BTQ entitlement. As per Government of India regulations, you are allowed to carry this foreign exchange partly in currency and partly in traveller’s cheques (TCs), which are considered safer and widely accepted for a nominal service fee. In case of loss or theft, TCs can be replaced if you have recorded their numbers and retained the counterfoils, subject to applicable conditions.
