Travel Tips
Plan Your Itinerary Carefully

• The Northeast is vast and diverse; don’t try to cover all eight states in one trip.
• Choose 2–3 states depending on your time — e.g., Meghalaya + Assam + Arunachal Pradesh make a convenient circuit.
• Check travel distances — some routes take longer than expected due to hilly terrain.

Getting Around

• Roads are scenic but winding — expect slower travel times.
• Hire local taxis or shared sumos for inter-town travel; public transport can be limited.
• In some regions, drivers double as local guides, which can enhance your experience.
• Carry cash for tolls and small towns — ATMs are not always reliable.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

• October to April is ideal — pleasant weather, clear skies, and fewer landslides.
• Avoid peak monsoon (June–September) in hilly areas due to roadblocks and heavy rain.
• Pack layered clothing — temperatures can vary widely within a single day.

Accommodation

• Book hotels or homestays in advance, especially in popular areas like Shillong, Tawang, or Gangtok.
• Try eco-lodges and homestays for authentic local experiences.
• In remote villages, basic accommodation might lack heating or hot water — carry warm clothes.

Food & Water

• Local cuisine varies — from Assamese thalis to Naga smoked meats and Sikkimese momos.
• Try local dishes but be mindful of spice levels.
• Always drink bottled or filtered water and carry water purification tablets for treks.

Culture & Etiquette

• The Northeast is culturally rich and diverse — respect local traditions, dress modestly, and ask before photographing people.
• Some tribal areas have restricted entry during local festivals or rituals — check locally before visiting.
• Learn a few basic greetings; English and Hindi are understood in most urban areas, but local languages dominate in villages.

Connectivity

• Mobile networks can be patchy in remote or border areas.
• BSNL, Jio, and Airtel offer the widest coverage, but signal strength varies by state.
• Download offline maps (e.g., Google Maps offline mode) before your journey.

Money & Essentials

• Carry sufficient cash, especially in smaller towns and villages.
• Digital payments (UPI, Paytm) are growing but not universal.
• ATMs can run out of cash — withdraw in major towns like Guwahati, Shillong, or Gangtok.

Safety & Health

• The region is generally safe and people are welcoming.
• Avoid isolated travel after dark in remote areas.
• Carry a basic first-aid kit and motion-sickness medication (roads are twisty!).
• Inform someone of your route if going on treks or remote road trips.

Responsible Travel

• Respect nature — don’t litter or pick rare flowers.
• Avoid plastic bottles; refill your own.
• Support local artisans by buying authentic handlooms and crafts directly from communities.

Bonus Tips

• Carry a power bank, torch, and raincoat.
• Keep photocopies of ID and permits handy for checkpoints.
• Attend local festivals like Hornbill (Nagaland), Bihu (Assam), or Losar (Sikkim) for a deep cultural experience
