Lahaul Spiti – Trans Himalayas
Lahaul-Spiti, tucked away in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, is a breathtakingly beautiful and remote region known for its stark landscapes, ancient monasteries, and Tibetan-Buddhist culture. The valleys are surrounded by snow-clad peaks, with dramatic vistas of rugged mountains, deep gorges, and turquoise rivers. While Lahaul is greener and more accessible, Spiti is a high-altitude desert offering surreal views and spiritual solitude. Key attractions include Key Monastery, Chandratal Lake, and the villages of Kaza, Tabo, and Dhankar. The region is ideal for trekkers, bikers, and those seeking raw Himalayan beauty. Due to its altitude, the best time to visit is between June and September.

Begin your journey from Chandigarh after a hearty breakfast, setting off on a scenic drive into the heart of the Himalayas. The road winds its way through picturesque valleys and pine-covered hills, taking you via the iconic hill stations of Shimla and Kufri, each offering glimpses of colonial charm and natural beauty. As you ascend, the air grows crisper, and panoramic views become more breathtaking with every turn.
Stop for lunch en route at a cozy roadside dhaba or café near Theog or Fagu, where you can enjoy local dishes amidst stunning landscapes. Afterward, continue your journey toward Narkanda, a serene mountain town nestled at an altitude of about 2,700 meters, known for its apple orchards and peaceful ambiance. Upon arrival at Narkanda, check in to your hotel and take some time to unwind. If time and energy permit, head to Hatu Peak—the highest point in the area (approx. 8 km drive followed by a short trek)—to witness a stunning sunset over the snow-capped peaks and dense forests.
Return to your hotel for a comforting dinner featuring warm Himachali cuisine, such as siddu, madra, or Khatha gosht, served with local hospitality. Enjoy a peaceful night amid the cool mountain air.
Overnight at Narkanda hotel.
Start your day early with a refreshing breakfast at your Narkanda hotel, and get ready for a scenic drive deeper into Himachal's Kinnaur region. The journey from Narkanda to Kalpa is a mesmerizing one, filled with dramatic landscapes, apple orchards, and winding mountain roads.
Drive down from Narkanda toward Rampur, tracing the Sutlej River. Around mid-morning, make a memorable halt at Sarahan, a charming village perched above the river valley. Here, visit the Bhimakali Temple, a revered Shakti Peeth and architectural marvel, famous for its striking blend of Indo-Tibetan wooden pagoda-style design, silver detailing, and spiritual ambiance. Spend some quiet moments admiring the serene surroundings and the snow-covered peaks in the distance.
After Sarahan, continue the drive downhill to Jeori, a common resting point for travelers, where you can stop for lunch at a local dhaba or small café offering traditional Himachali fare.
Post-lunch, rejoin the road that hugs the Sutlej River and gradually begins climbing toward Reckong Peo, the administrative headquarters of Kinnaur. As you ascend from Peo to Kalpa, the landscape transforms into terraced fields, pine forests, and stunning views of the high Himalayan range.
By evening, arrive at Kalpa, a serene village nestled at around 2,960 meters, offering panoramic views of the majestic Kinner Kailash range—especially captivating during sunset as the peaks glow golden and pink. Check in to your hotel and relax. Later, enjoy a hearty traditional dinner, often featuring local delicacies like thenthuk, momos, or Himalayan lentils and rice, served with warm hospitality under a star-studded sky and surrounded by the mighty Himalayas.
Overnight at Kalpa hotel.
Start your day early with a hearty breakfast amidst the breathtaking Kinner Kailash views in Kalpa. After check-out, begin your scenic and adventurous journey toward Tabo, one of the oldest inhabited villages in the Spiti Valley region.
As you descend from Kalpa and rejoin the National Highway 505, the landscape begins to change dramatically. The verdant forests and apple orchards of Kinnaur slowly give way to the arid, high-altitude desert terrain of Spiti. You’ll drive alongside the Sutlej River, which eventually merges with the Spiti River — a visual treat with turquoise waters cutting through deep gorges and stark cliffs.
En Route Highlights: Nako Village (Altitude 3,625 m)
A crucial stop on the way, Nako is a picturesque high-altitude village nestled near the Indo-Tibetan border. Set against the backdrop of barren hills, the serene Nako Lake is a perfect spot for a peaceful break and lakeside lunch. Explore the Nako Monastery, a centuries-old gompa with beautiful murals and prayer wheels, offering insight into the region’s deep-rooted Buddhist culture.
Gue Village (Optional Detour)
If time and road conditions permit, take a detour to Gue, a small village famous for housing a naturally preserved 500-year-old mummy of a Buddhist monk, visible in a glass case. The road is narrow and slightly off the main highway, but the detour is rewarding for those interested in mysticism and Himalayan legends. By late afternoon or early evening, you will arrive in Tabo, often referred to as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas". Tabo is renowned for its over 1,000-year-old monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site featuring ancient murals, stucco sculptures, and Tibetan-style frescoes.
After check-in at a local guesthouse or hotel, unwind and enjoy a hot traditional dinner — often featuring local Spitian dishes like thukpa, momos, or tingmo with vegetable stew.
Spend the night in Tabo under a star-filled sky, as the high-altitude desert offers remarkably clear views of the Milky Way. Rest well, for more high-altitude adventures await in the coming days.
Overnight at Tabo hotel.
Begin your day with a nourishing breakfast at your hotel in Tabo, soaking in the morning serenity of this ancient village nestled in the Spiti Valley. Before departing, visit the Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in the Himalayas. Over 1,000 years old, this UNESCO World Heritage site is often called the “Ajanta of the Himalayas” due to its ancient murals, stucco statues, and spiritual ambience. Take your time exploring its meditation caves and ornate frescoes that offer a window into Tibetan Buddhist art and heritage.
Post-visit, depart for Kaza, the administrative center of Spiti Valley. As you travel along the rugged, scenic mountain road, make a memorable stop at the Dhankar Monastery. Dramatically perched on a cliff at the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, Dhankar offers spectacular panoramic views and a glimpse into monastic life at high altitudes. If time permits, take a short hike to the nearby Dhankar Lake, a serene spot above the monastery
From here, make a detour into the enchanting Pin Valley National Park, a protected area rich in biodiversity. Known as the land of snow leopards and Siberian ibex, Pin Valley is a stark contrast to the barren Spiti landscape — here, you'll find greener pastures, glacial streams, and remote hamlets.
Continue your drive deeper into the valley until you reach Mudh Village, the last inhabited village and a popular base for trekkers. Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local homestay or café, often featuring simple yet hearty Tibetan cuisine like thukpa or momos. The lush setting, with fields of peas and barley framed by soaring peaks, is perfect for photography and quiet reflection.
After lunch, start your return journey toward Kaza, reaching by evening. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel or guesthouse. The rest of the evening is free to relax, stroll through the quiet streets of Kaza, or sip butter tea while gazing at the twilight mountains.
End the day with a warm dinner at your hotel, and rest well for the adventures ahead in the heart of Spiti Valley.
Overnight at Kaza hotel or homestay.
Start your day with a warm breakfast at the hotel in Kaza, soaking in the crisp morning air and majestic Himalayan vistas.
Full-Day Sightseeing Tour of Spiti's High-Altitude Marvels: Key Monastery (Key Gompa)
Your first stop is the iconic Key Monastery, the largest and most picturesque monastery in Spiti. Perched dramatically on a hilltop at an altitude of 4,166 meters, the centuries-old gompa offers spectacular views of the Spiti River valley. Explore its ancient murals, prayer rooms, and assembly halls. If time allows, interact with the resident monks and soak in the meditative calm of this spiritual center.
Kibber Village
Next, drive to Kibber, once known as the world’s highest motorable village (at 4,270 meters). Set amidst stark mountain landscapes and deep gorges, Kibber offers a stunning setting for photography and reflection. You can stroll through the quiet lanes, visit the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary (home to elusive snow leopards, blue sheep), or engage with locals who live in traditional stone houses.
Lunch Stop at Langza or Kibber
Enjoy a local lunch at a homestay or café in either Langza or Kibber. Savor Spitian delicacies like thukpa, tingmo (steamed bread), or butter tea amidst the charm of Himalayan hospitality.
Langza Village
After lunch, continue to Langza, a remote village nestled at over 4,400 meters. This village is famed for its towering Buddha statue that overlooks the valley, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Langza is also a paradise for fossil hunters—remnants of marine life from when this region was submerged under the Tethys Sea millions of years ago.
Hikkim Village
Drive further up to Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office. If open, you can send a postcard to your friends or family from this high-altitude marvel—an unforgettable souvenir!
Komic Village
The final destination is Komic, among the highest permanently inhabited villages on Earth at 4,587 meters. Visit the Tangyud Monastery, believed to be over 500 years old, and take in the surreal silence and beauty of this otherworldly location.
By late afternoon or early evening, return to Kaza, bringing with you stunning memories and photos of this unique day exploring the top of the world.
Enjoy a warm dinner with bonfire at your hotel or guesthouse. Share stories with fellow travelers under the starlit Spiti sky & preparing for the next leg of your Himalayan adventure.
Overnight at Kaza hotel or homestay.
Start your day with an early breakfast served at your hotel in Kaza. After checking out, embark on a spectacular drive towards Chandratal Lake, one of the most enchanting alpine lakes in the Himalayas, nestled at an altitude of around 4,300 meters.
The route takes you through a starkly beautiful high-altitude desert, offering jaw-dropping views of towering peaks and barren landscapes. As you ascend, you’ll cross the famous Kunzum La Pass (approx. 4,550 m) — a high mountain pass that connects Spiti Valley with Lahaul. Stop briefly at the Kunzum Mata Temple to seek blessings for a safe journey, while also taking in panoramic views of snow-laden peaks. Continue driving towards Batal, a remote settlement known for its rugged charm. Here, enjoys a quick lunch stop at the famous Chacha-Chachi Dhaba, a modest but legendary eatery run by a warm-hearted couple, popular among travelers for their hospitality in the middle of nowhere.
From Batal, the journey gets more adventurous as the road narrows into a bumpy track, hugging cliffs and crossing glacial streams. After a thrilling drive, you’ll reach the Chandratal parking area. From here, it’s a short and scenic trek of about 2 km to reach the mesmerizing Chandratal Lake, also called the "Moon Lake" due to its crescent shape.
Surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Chandra Bhaga range, the lake’s shimmering turquoise waters and surreal setting at such high altitude create a dreamlike atmosphere. Spend time soaking in the tranquil beauty, capturing photos, or simply sitting in silence by the lake’s edge — the experience is truly meditative.
As the sun begins to dip, return to the parking area and head towards your luxury campsite near Chandratal. The camps offer a unique high-altitude glamping experience with comfortable tents, cozy bedding, and warm meals. Enjoy dinner by the bonfire, under a sky filled with countless stars — a rare and magical sight in the absence of light pollution.
Overnight at Chandratal Premium Camp.
Our final day of the Spiti Valley journey begins early, as you bid farewell to the pristine beauty of Chandratal Lake.
After a quick breakfast or packed meal from the camp, begin your long yet scenic drive towards Chandigarh.
The initial stretch from Chandratal to Batal is on a rugged mountain road, filled with boulders and water crossings — offering a last taste of the Spiti region’s raw, untamed charm. Continue your descent through the stunning Chhatru Valley, with the Chandra River running alongside, offering postcard-perfect views of snow-capped peaks, waterfalls, and alpine terrain.
From Chhatru, drive towards Gramphu, where you leave the Spiti region behind and enter the lush green valleys of Lahaul. Shortly afterward, you’ll enter the engineering marvel that is the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km) — one of the longest high-altitude tunnels in the world. Exiting the tunnel near Solang Valley, you’re now back in the familiar greenery of Manali, marking a major transition from barren high-altitude terrain to forested foothills
After a brief refreshment or tea break in Manali (if time permits), continue your drive down via Kullu or Bhuntar, where you can stop for lunch at a local dhaba or restaurant along the Beas River. Enjoy views of terraced apple orchards and lively Himachali towns as you proceed along the scenic NH3 highway.
The journey from Kullu to Chandigarh takes you through Mandi, Bilaspur, and Swarghat, gradually descending into the plains of northern India. Roads here are smoother and faster, but the long drive may be tiring, so short tea or restroom breaks are recommended at regular intervals.
Expect to arrive in Chandigarh by late evening or night, depending on road and traffic conditions. Upon reaching, check in to your hotel for a much-needed rest.
Overnight at Chandigarh Hotel.
Begin your final day of the journey with a relaxing breakfast served at the hotel. Take in the last views of the hills or cityscape, and reflect on the memorable experiences from your adventure. After breakfast, complete the check-out formalities at the hotel.
Depending on your flight or train schedule, your vehicle will be arranged for a timely drop-off at the nearest airport or railway station. The drive offers a final glimpse of the scenic beauty or bustling town life that made your journey so special. As you depart, carry along not just souvenirs but cherished memories of serene landscapes, high-altitude adventures, local culture, warm hospitality, and unforgettable moments spent with fellow travelers or loved ones. "Trip Concludes – with memories to last a lifetime".
