Travel Tips
Plan Island Hopping Wisely

Don’t try to fit too many islands into one trip—distances and ferry schedules can vary. Choose 2–3 islands to explore in-depth (like Santorini, Mykonos, and Naxos).

Pack Light and Smart

Greece has lots of cobblestone streets, stairs, and hills. Bring comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.

Use Public Transport in Athens

The Athens Metro is clean, safe, and efficient for exploring the city. Taxis are affordable, but always ask for the meter to be turned on.

Ferry Tips

Ferries can get crowded. Arrive early, book seats in advance, and bring snacks, especially for longer rides (like Piraeus to Santorini).

Eat Like a Local

Try moussaka, souvlaki, Greek salad, spanakopita, and fresh seafood. Look for tavernas where locals eat for authentic, budget-friendly meals.

Don’t Rush Meals

Greeks enjoy long, leisurely meals. Dinner often starts around 8–9 PM. Don’t expect fast service—relax and enjoy the pace.

Tipping Is Appreciated

It’s not mandatory, but leaving 5–10% or rounding up the bill is customary in restaurants and cafés.

Respect Religious Sites

When visiting churches or monasteries, dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees, and remove hats.

Explore Beyond the Islands

Mainland gems like Delphi, Meteora, and Nafplio offer incredible history and scenery with fewer crowds.

Learn a Few Greek Words

Simple phrases like “Kalimera” (Good morning), “Efharisto” (Thank you), and “Parakalo” (Please/You’re welcome) go a long way.

Greet with a Smile, Not a Handshake

Greeks are warm and expressive—expect friendly nods, smiles, and “Yassas” (hello), especially in small towns.

Carry Cash

While cards are accepted in many places, smaller villages, taxis, and some tavernas may prefer cash. ATMs are widely available.

Use Sunscreen Liberally

Greek sun is strong, even in spring or autumn. Apply sunscreen frequently to avoid burns.

Be Prepared for “Quiet Hours”

In many areas, especially residential or rural, midday siesta times (usually 2–5 PM) and nighttime quiet hours (after 11 PM) are observed.
