Begin your day with a peaceful stroll through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, a lush oasis featuring themed gardens, exotic plants, and tranquil walking paths. Continue to the Christchurch Art Gallery, home to an inspiring collection of contemporary and classic New Zealand art.
Next, immerse yourself in the quirky charm of Re:START Mall, a creative shopping district built from colorful shipping containers, filled with boutique shops, cafés, and eateries. Dive into the region’s history and Maori heritage at the Canterbury Museum, located near the city center.
Lunch will be at your own expense and as per your individual preference.
In the afternoon, head to the International Antarctic Centre for a chilly adventure. Experience the thrill of an Antarctic storm room, meet adorable huskies, and ride the all-terrain Hägglund vehicle. Later, soar above the city aboard the Christchurch Gondola – take in panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps, and Lyttelton Harbour.

Overnight at Christchurch Hotel.
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and proceed to the Christchurch Train Station to begin one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys — the legendary TranzAlpine Train.
Board the train and travel westward across the sweeping Canterbury Plains, witnessing the picturesque farmlands roll by. As the train climbs into the Southern Alps, prepare to be amazed by the breathtaking scenery — deep gorges, braided rivers, and snow-capped peaks surround you. The journey continues through the stunning Waimakariri Gorge and ascends to Arthur’s Pass, nestled in the heart of Arthur’s Pass National Park.
At Arthur’s Pass, disembark the train where your professional driver-guide will greet you for the next leg of your journey. Travel in comfort aboard a deluxe mini-van as you descend through dense beech forests and dramatic alpine landscapes toward the West Coast.
Along the way, stop in Hokitika, a charming historic town that once boomed during the gold rush era. It is also a culturally significant area for the Māori people, who sought pounamu (greenstone) in the nearby rivers and valleys. Explore local jade galleries and artisan shops, and take in the rugged beauty of the west coast shoreline.
Continue your journey through glacier country, witnessing traces of the last Ice Age — such as kettle lakes formed by retreating glaciers — all set against a backdrop of lush rainforest and soaring mountains.
A delicious café lunch and a morning or afternoon tea is included during the journey to keep you refreshed as you explore New Zealand’s untamed natural beauty.
Arrive in Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast and your stopover for the evening. Enjoy a local dinner at the hotel or nearby restaurant (at your own cost). After a day filled with unforgettable sights and experiences, relax and unwind — readying yourself for the next day’s scenic and adventurous journey to Queenstown.
Important Note:
The TranzAlpine Train is one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world and is extremely popular with both international and domestic travelers. To avoid disappointment, it is highly recommended to book your TranzAlpine train tickets well in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Seats are limited and tend to sell out quickly.
Overnight at Greymouth Hotel.
After breakfast, begin your unforgettable road journey from Greymouth, located on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Your professional driver/guide will meet you at your hotel or prearranged pickup point, and together you'll embark on a breathtaking full-day scenic drive to Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world.
Scenic Highlights En Route:
Greymouth to Hokitika - Your first leg takes you south along State Highway 6, hugging the rugged coastline. A short stop in Hokitika, once a booming gold rush town, allows time to explore its charming main street, browse local greenstone (pounamu) and artisan shops, and perhaps visit the Hokitika Beach or Gorge for a photo opportunity.
Hokitika to Franz Josef & Fox Glacier - The journey continues through lush native rainforests and along the edge of the Southern Alps. You’ll pass through small settlements like Ross, Harihari, and Whataroa, before reaching the famous Glacier Country. Stop for lunch (on own cost) in Franz Josef Village, and enjoy optional photo stops at either Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier, depending on time and weather conditions. These massive ice giants descending into temperate rainforests are truly awe-inspiring.
Haast Pass - A Drive Through Untamed Wilderness - Departing the glaciers, you'll head toward Haast Pass, one of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine crossings. This stretch of road winds through UNESCO-listed Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area, offering views of waterfalls, dense forests, and deep river valleys. Short scenic walks like Thunder Creek Falls or Fantail Falls can be added as desired.
Lakes Wanaka & Hawea - As you descend into the Central Otago region, the landscape opens up to glacial lakes surrounded by alpine peaks. Enjoy scenic stops at Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, with their serene turquoise waters and dramatic backdrops — perfect for photos or a peaceful stretch break.
Wanaka to Queenstown via Crown Range or Cromwell
From Wanaka, your driver can take you either:
• via the Crown Range Road – New Zealand’s highest sealed highway offering spectacular alpine vistas, or
• through Cromwell, passing orchards and vineyards in the Gibbston Valley wine region.
Stop for refreshments or a quick visit to Roaring Meg Lookout or a local fruit stall depending on route and timing.
Arrive in Queenstown by late afternoon or early evening. Check-in at your hotel and relax after a long but mesmerizing journey through some of New Zealand's most diverse and dramatic landscapes. The remainder of the day is free to explore the lakeside town or enjoy dinner at one of Queenstown’s many top-rated restaurants.
